In Crooked Angels Carol Lee vividly charts the course of a journey to the
source of an illness, and a return to health. One summer's morning Carol
awakes to find that she has changed overnight. She is ensnared by a cage of
pain and no longer the person she was hours before - a successful author and
journalist, a woman with friends who hosts parties, plays the piano and
plays tennis. She is 'like a frozen black and white snapshot' of who she
once was. But this is only the beginning of her story. It will take two
years for her to discover what has happened to her and why.
Doctors, physiotherapists and specialists offer a bewildering array of
diagnoses, none of which help. After one treatment makes her considerably
worse Carol retreats to an armchair where she sits almost motionless. She
begins to read about RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury). Unrecognised by the
majority of medical professionals it is caused by fast, repetitive actions
on a keyboard or instrument.
Although by this time Carol is afraid of being touched she is persuaded to
see an osteopath. He tells her to go away and think, 'You have past
injuries,' he says. 'I can work on the muscles. Only you can work on the
mind.' With these words Carol begins to embark on the second stage of her
journey. Now she is forced to confront the link between her mind and her
body, and the inextricable connection between past and present.
For years Carol's body has been hard at work to protect her from something
she cannot grasp. With almost forensic skill Carol uncovers her hidden
history and faces it. Crooked Angels is the compelling story of her journey
back to health.
